The Rab island

The Rab island
Rab The Rab Island (the name probably derivated from the Illyric word ‘Arb’, which means ‘dark’, ‘green forested’) is located in the north Adriatic Sea.
The Island is 22 kilometers in length, and has the surface of 91 square kilometers, where approximately 9500 inhabitants live. Rab is the most southern island of all the islands in the Kvarner bay. The neighboring Islands are Krk, Pag and Dolin (uninhabited). The climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters and moderately warm summer months. The temperatures rarely go below 0 during the winter months. The peak of Velebit is often covered in snow. The bottom is predominately karst. Across the whole island there are three mountain ranges, the biggest being Kamenjak, that splits the peninsula Lopar in the north and the eponymous locality with the rest ofthe island.
On a peninsula to the west is Kalifront, one of the last remaining oak forests on the Mediterranean. The island is covered approximately 49% by forests, making it one of themost arboreous islands in the country. More than 300 springs of water can be found on Rab, and some of them are used asdrinking water supplies.
The patron saint of the city and the whole island is the Holy Christophorus, whose carnial is retained on the island as a holy relic. On the 27th of July, on the day of St. Christophorus, Rab celebrates the knight festival ‘’Rapska Fjera’’.
The legend tells that Marino, a stonemason from Rab, founded San Marino in the Year 301, one of the oldest Republics in Europe.
